River

About Her

River is more than just a dog—she’s my best friend, my partner, and the heart of so many of my adventures. She’s incredibly smart, fully trained, and has even taught herself essential skills like “heel” and stalking for hunting, displaying a natural instinct that always amazes me. Growing up in Elfin Cove, a small, picturesque village in Alaska, River’s life was intertwined with the wilderness around us. As a pointer for hunting, she became my most trusted companion in the field. When we were out hunting for deer, she would be the one to lead the way, even when I wanted to give up. On days when I’d think there was no hope left, River’s unwavering focus and determination would guide us to success. Her work wasn’t just about finding the deer—it was about the deep bond we shared, the silent communication between us that could never be explained in words.

But when she wasn’t out hunting, River was the picture of calm and contentment. Most days, you’d find her sprawled out on the beach, her fur warmed by the sun, as she watched the world around her. Elfin Cove is a small village, and River knew everyone. She was a constant presence for anyone coming in by boat. When new people arrived, River would be there at the dock, greeting them with a wagging tail and a gentle nudge. She was so loved by the villagers that they would bring her whole sandwiches and fresh salmon, always sharing their meals with her as a sign of affection. She never barked or jumped on anyone—her demeanor was calm and reserved. But it was the kids who truly adored her. They’d crawl all over her, braid her hair, and lay with her on the dock. No matter what they did, River never seemed to care. Most of the time, she’d fall asleep right in the middle of it all, content and at peace.

One of the places River loved the most was the fuel dock, where she’d spend hours with her dad, Tanner. There, she developed a special bond with the boats that came in. She loved when a boat pulled up because she knew that meant a friend was arriving. Her excitement was palpable, and her tail would wag furiously as she rushed to greet the familiar faces. There was something magical about those moments, watching River’s joy as she reconnected with old friends.

Fishing with River was always an adventure in itself. When we’d head out onto the water, River would settle in beside me, eyes scanning the ocean with a focus only she could possess. But when a fish broke the surface, River would go wild with excitement. Her body would shake with energy, unable to contain her joy at the sight of the fish, as though she could sense the thrill of the moment. Even in moments when seals, sealions and orcas would pop up right next to the boat, she was focused and unbothered ready to protect if need be. She wasn’t just my companion on land; she was my partner on the water, too.

When we opened our café, Cups n’ Crumbs, in Elfin Cove, River became the official greeter. She would lay outside the café, greeting every customer who walked by. Her signature move was stealing hats from unsuspecting visitors. She’d gently tug them off their heads, then trot around in circles with the hat proudly clutched in her mouth, making the cutest happy grunt noises. It was impossible not to smile at her antics. Of course, if you told her to “drop,” she would carefully place the hat back in your hands, as if to say, “Here you go, I was just making sure it was safe with me.”

On top of all that she is AKC certified, a distinction that marks her as an exemplary representative of her breed. The American Kennel Club (AKC) certification means that River meets the breed standards for a pointer, from her physical traits to her temperament. It also means she’s been recognized as a dog of exceptional quality, having passed a series of rigorous evaluations. Her certification is a testament to all the hard work, training, and love she’s received over the years. But to me, River is more than just a certified dog—she’s a beloved companion, an unspoken partner in everything, and the best friend I could ever ask for. Through every hunt, every fishing trip, and every quiet moment we’ve shared, River has proven that the bond we have is something truly extraordinary. She’s not just part of my life; she is my life.
